I know that I have it when I can… explain how Atlanta mayors Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young continued the development of Atlanta and impacted the state of Georgia. Activity or Assignment with Text/Links Students will start off reading about Lester Maddox in the textbook and complete the comprehension questions that go along with the reading. Students will be involved in the lesson by engaging in the slide presentation. Students will be given notes on Lester Maddox and his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The teacher will go through the slide presentation explaining Georgia’s resistance to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically Lester Maddox’s role in fighting back against the Civil Rights Act. When this is completed, students will reflect on the lesson by writing about their thoughts on Lester Maddox and the change he went through later in his life. This will be done on the back of their comprehension questions. Students will complete a review activity in preparation for today’s quiz. Students will take the quiz. After the quiz, the students will continue the review activity, which will help them prepare for Thursday’s test. The students will prepare for tomorrow’s test. First, they will complete a quiz analysis. After that, they will play Gimkit and/or other review games. The students will take a test over the Modern Civil Rights Movement. What are politicians? What are some public offices that citizens can run for? What does the mayor of a city do? Students will use the slide presentation information to answer the Maynard Jackson comprehension questions on their worksheets. Maynard Jackson Annotated Illustration - Students will have to draw a picture of Maynard Jackson based on the image they got of Maynard Jackson from answering the comprehension questions. They will then annotate their picture with text labels and descriptions of the key points in their picture.
