I know that I have it when I can… describe the role of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the March on Washington in the Civil Rights Movement.


I know that I have it when I can… describe the role of John Lewis, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Albany Movement in the Civil Rights Movement.

I know I have it when I can describe what John Lewis meant by the term “good trouble”, using evidence from the article: John Lewis Inspires ‘Good Trouble’.

I know that I have it when I can describe the ways that Georgia resisted the Civil Rights Act, emphasizing the role of Lester Maddox.


Activity or Assignment with Text/Links


We will have a discussion about John Lewis, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Albany Movement while information about these topics is presented to them via a slide presentation.


Students will answer comprehension questions using the information presented to them and on their worksheet.


Quiz Thursday over standard SS8H11b.

Today will be a utility day for students to catch up on the information that we have been presenting to them since the beginning of this unit.


Students will also have to use the knowledge that they have learned thus far to complete a SS8H11b Review Activity.


Students will prepare for tomorrow’s quiz!

TeenBiz article: John Lewis Inspires ‘Good Trouble’.


Discuss the before reading poll. Do you agree that nothing can stop the power of determined and committed people to make a change in society?


The students will complete the five green circles of the TeenBiz article: John Lewis Inspires “Good Trouble”.


Discuss the thought question.

Students will start off reading about Lester Maddox in the textbook and complete the comprehension questions that go along with the reading. Students will be involved in the lesson by engaging in the slide presentation. Students will be given notes on Lester Maddox and his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The teacher will go through the slide presentation explaining Georgia’s resistance to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically Lester Maddox’s role in fighting back against the Civil Rights Act. When this is completed, students will reflect on the lesson by writing about their thoughts on Lester Maddox and the change he went through later in his life. This will be done on the back of their comprehension questions
