The students will complete a notes activity throughout the lesson. If time allows: Students will analyze a scenario where they, as Georgia legislators, have to make decisions about how to distribute Georgia’s land. Put the Land Lottery Simulation image up on the smartboard, and tell students to get out their lottery numbers. Tell them that if they can find their number on the screen then they have won the land lottery. Pass out candy to the land lottery winners to represent the land they just won! Pass out the “Land Lottery Simulation” worksheet, and have students complete this assignment. Students will be introduced to the land lottery system by reading “The Land Lottery System” (pp. 158, 159) in their Georgia textbook. Along the way we will discuss this topic, and students will answer a few questions. Students will complete a Cotton Gin/Railroad Activity, which requires them to read, watch videos, and answer comprehension questions about the impact of the cotton gin and railroads. This is a two day lesson (will conclude on Thursday).
