Indigenous Peoples Day

Explain how technological developments had an impact on Georgia’s growth.


Explain the factors that affected westward expansion in Georgia.

Describe the role of William McIntosh in the removal of the Creek from Georgia.

Analyze how key people and events led to the removal of the Cherokee from Georgia. 


Success Criteria


I know that I have it when I can explain the impact of the cotton gin and railroads on Georgia’s growth.


I know that I have it when I can explain the reasons for establishing UGA and the movement of Georgia’s capitals. I can evaluate the impact of Georgia’s three land policies. I can explain how technological developments had an impact of Georgia’s growth.

I know that I have it when I can describe the Red Stick War, William McIntosh, and the Treaty of Indian Springs.


I know that I have it when I can describe John Ross, John Marshall, and Andrew Jackson, as well as the Dahlonega Gold Rush, Worcester v. Georgia, and I can describe how they led to the Trail of Tears. 


Activity or Assignment with Text/Links


Students will complete a Cotton Gin/Railroad Activity, which requires them to read, watch videos, and answer comprehension questions about the impact of the cotton gin and railroads. This is a two day lesson (Will conclude today, Tuesday).


Gifted/Advanced Activity


Students will review for a quiz, and then take the quiz.


The review will consist of student’s using their completed activities to complete a crossword puzzle.


Students will then take the UGA, Georgia’s Capitals, Land Policies, and Technological Developments Quiz.

I will use a slide presentation to present the information to the class.


Students will complete a worksheet as they learn the material.


At the end of the lesson students will create a baseball card of William McIntosh.

The students will read the story of the removal of the Cherokee from Georgia. After that, the teacher will use slides to review the key points. Notes will be provided.


The students will be given a blank piece of paper to fold into 6 sections. Throughout the lesson, they will update their paper to summarize the six people/events from the success criteria.


On the back of the paper, the students will write a “wikipedia” entry about the Trail of Tears.


This is a two day lesson (Will conclude on Monday).
