Standard/s: S7L4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to examine the interdependence of organisms with one another and their environments. a. Construct an explanation for the patterns of interactions observed in different ecosystems in terms of the relationships among and between organisms and abiotic components of the ecosystem. (Clarification statement: The interactions include, but are not limited to, predator-prey relationships, competition, mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism.)

Learning Target/ Teaching Point: 

• I can identify and explain the different ways that organisms interact with one another. 

Success Criteria: 

• Define symbiosis 

• Explain and give an example of mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. 

• Compare and contrast each form of symbiosis 

Opening (I Do)

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

INTRODUCTION/CONNECTION:

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:
- Introduce symbiosis through powerpoint. Students will take notes on mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Videos will be shown to reinforce each term.

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE: 
Discussions during videos about each form of symbiosis and the differences between each. After the presentation, students will receive a symbiosis handout titled, “Good Buddies”. The class will go over the first couple questions together. 

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Students will finish the good buddies worksheet once the class reviews the first few questions. 

Closing  (We Check)

Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .
