INTRODUCTION/CONNECTION:

Science Starter: What is biotic? What is abiotic?

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

Continue with the Ecology presentation.  Introduce 6 characteristics of life. Students will record on a graphic organizer.

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE:  

Characteristics of Life graphic organizer

Create a RACER with students under T-chart. Question: What makes something living?  

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Biotic vs Abiotic Card Sort: Students are given cards with various pictures and must sort them as biotic or abiotic. After a class discussion of characteristics of living things, students record their objects in a  t-chart in their notebooks.
