Standard/s: S7L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compared scientifically.

a. Develop and defend a model that categorizes organisms based on common characteristics. 

Learning Target/ Teaching Point: I can describe the six kingdoms of life.

Success Criteria: 

  • Identify and compare the six kingdoms 

  • Explain characteristics that make each kingdom unique

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

Review the characteristics of fungi and what makes their kingdom unique. 

Introduce today’s mushroom dissection lab by explaining what to do.

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE:  


Distribute mushrooms to tables along with scalpels and other dissection tools. Guide students by giving them directions on what to cut and when. Ex: Students will first start by cutting the stem of the mushroom off, followed by the fruiting body, and then removing the gills. Students will be prompted throughout the dissection.  


INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:


Students will use the dissection guide given to them, along with informational text, to answer assessment questions on fungi. 


Virtual: Brainpop Assignment instead of dissection
