Teacher: Robert Cannon and Patrick Mickey |
Unit/Session: Unit 1: Energy Types/Pendulum Lab |
Date of Instruction: 8/16/21 |
Standard/s: S8P2b |
Learning Target/ Teaching Point: I can explain the relationship between potential and kinetic energy so that I can describe what happens to the amount of energy when you ride a roller coaster. |
Success Criteria: Define potential and kinetic energy using one word each Define Joule Describe how to increase amounts of potential and kinetic energy Draw a model that shows amounts of potential and kinetic energy changing Define the Law of Conservation of Energy Describe what happens to the amounts of potential and kinetic energy when riding down a hill, and what happens to the total amount Add and subtract to determine the amount of energy in a system

Opening (I Do) An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson. TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10
| INTRODUCTION/CONNECTION: Introduce energy and gravity.
|
DIRECT INSTRUCTION: Students will be given a few items that will allow them to create an experiment that will test the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. |
Work Period (We Do, You Do) Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period. TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8,10
| GUIDED PRACTICE: We will have an open discussion about what we think energy is and how it affects the world around us. We will then describe the effect of height on storing energy. |
INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION: Creation of a pendulum using string, weights, and a vertical stand.
Students will attempt to design an experiment using their given materials that tests potential and kinetic energy. After 10 minutes, they will be given proper instructions of how to set up the experiment and achieve the desired results. |
Closing (We Check) Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding . TKES : 1,2,3, 4,5,6,7,8
| SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: Students will write a brief summary of the activity and their findings Formative Assessment : Informal observations, discussion, and check of summarizer
Formative Assessment : Class discussion
