NMS Daily Lesson Plan for Instruction

(8th Grade/Social Studies)

Date of Instruction: Wednesday, March 3rd - Friday, March 5th

Standard/s: SS8H10c

Learning Target/ Teaching Point: Describe the relationship between the end of the white primary and the 1946 governor’s race.


Success Criteria: I know that I have it when I can… explain the role that Thomas Brewer and Primus King had in ending the white primary. Explain why three men: Ellis Arnall, Herman Talmadge, and Melvin Thompson all claimed to be governor of Georgia at the same time.

Opening (I Do)

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

INTRODUCTION/CONNECTION:


Wednesday - What are Black Codes? What are some examples of Black Codes? What is the white primary? How does the white primary take away voting rights from African Americans?


Friday - Who was Eugene Talmadge? What issues did he support? What issues did he oppose? How many times was he elected governor?

Wednesday & Friday - Students will use textbook (pp. 448, 449 “White Primaries are Struck Downl” and textbook (pp. 439, 440) “Governor’s Race / Three Governors Controversy / Strange But True” to answer the comprehension questions on their worksheet.


Work Period  (We Do, You Do)

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE:


Wednesday & Friday - The teacher will use a powerpoint to teach about the end of the white primary and the 1946 governor’s race. Students are responsible for completing their cloze notes. Along the way we will discuss the material as it is being presented.


INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:


Wednesday & Friday - Students will use their Social Studies Workbook (pp. 123-125) to answer questions #(341-345)

Closing  (We Check)

Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .

SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:


Wednesday - Students will also begin to review for their quiz on Monday, March 8th by beginning a review activity of what they have learned in this unit thus far.


Thursday - Students will finish the review for their quiz on Monday, March 8th by completing the review activity they started yesterday.


Formative Assessment :


None.


Homework

Students will have a quiz, Monday, March 8th over how technology transformed agriculture and created a population shift, how mayors: William B. Hartsfield and Ivan Allen, Jr. developed Atlanta, and the relationship between the end of the white primary and the 1946 governor’s race.
