NMS Daily Lesson Plan for Instruction

(Connections, Science, Social Studies, Math)

Teacher: Robert Cannon and Patrick Mickey

Unit/Session:  Unit 9 - Light:  RRDAT Models and Compare/Contrast Waves

Date of Instruction:  1/12/21

Standard/s:

S8P4a - Ask questions to develop explanations about the similarities and differences between electromagnetic and mechanical waves.

S8P4g - Develop and use models to demonstrate the effects that lenses have on light and their possible tech applications.

S8P4d - Develop and use a model to compare and contrast how light and sound waves are reflected, refracted, absorbed, diffracted or transmitted through various materials.

Learning Target/ Teaching Point:

I can compare and contrast the behaviors of light waves and sound waves, so that I can describe how they interact with different substances.

Success Criteria:

o Recall the meaning of the word propagate and which wave can go through empty space or through mediums and the particle movement of transverse waves as either parallel or perpendicular.

o List the 5 major differences between light and sound.

o Explain the effects of lenses on light, and how we can use them in our lives.

o Draw examples of Transmission, Absorption, Reflection, Refraction, and Diffraction as it relates to light.

Opening (I Do)

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10

INTRODUCTION/CONNECTION:

Review how colors are seen.

Presentation Slide 28

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

Students will be instructed on how waves interact with respect to light.

Work Period  (We Do, You Do)

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8,10

GUIDED PRACTICE:

We will complete a foldable together that shows the wave interactions RRDAT comparing light to sound.

Blank Foldable

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Students will go back and complete a full comparison of light waves and sound waves, outlining 3 things in common and 5 major differences.

Closing  (We Check)

Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .

TKES : 1,2,3, 4,5,6,7,8
