S7L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain how organisms reproduce

either sexually or asexually and transfer genetic information to determine the traits of their

offspring.

1. Construct an explanation supported with scientific evidence of the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait.

2. Develop and use a model to describe how asexual reproduction can result in offspring with identical genetic information while sexual reproduction results in genetic variation.

I can explain how organisms reproduce and transfer genetic information.

• Explain how genes and chromosomes determine inherited traits

• Know the father of genetics and his experiments

• Use a model to predict genetic variation of offspring

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

Review genetics and go over punnett squares, homo and heterozygous, and how traits are passed down from generation to generation. Review yesterday’s gizmo assignment and model how to correctly breed the chickens.

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

GUIDED PRACTICE: 

Review yesterday’s page 1 of the gizmo and go over the critical thinking questions found in the google doc. Preview the rest of the google doc assignment and allow students to finish the assignment today. 

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Students will finish their gizmo assignment via google docs.

SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:

Gizmo will be used as a classwork grade. The teacher will monitor the assignment and ask students critical thinking questions based on their breeding of chickens.
