Learning Target/ Teaching Point: Students will identify and say the members of their family. |
Success Criteria: Students will know they have it when they can name their family members. Advanced learners will also describe their family members.

Opening (I Do) An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson. TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 | INTRODUCTION/CONNECTION: Our families are very near and dear to us, so it stands to reason that we will want to talk about them. |
DIRECT INSTRUCTION: The teacher will show students a poem of the family members along with pictures. Soy yo/it’s me, éste es mi padre/papá/this is my father, ésta es mi madre/mamá/this is my mother, tío/uncle, tía/aunt, hermano/brother, hermana/sister, primo/male cousin, prima/female cousin, abuela/grandma, abuelo/grandpa. Notice that if it’s a male the word ends in “o” and females end in “a”. VIDEO (8 min.): Family life

Work Period (We Do, You Do) Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations. Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period. TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 | GUIDED PRACTICE: I will show students vocabulary of family members with pictures. We will also recite a poem. INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION: After students have practiced, they will draw a picture of their family and label the members. |
Closing (We Check) Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding . TKES : 1,2,3, 4,5,6,7,8 | SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: Teacher will look and listen for comprehension when students present the drawings of their families.
Formative Assessment: When asking questions and listening to their presentations, I will note any weaknesses. |
